Historic House Inspections

Inspecting historic houses or old homes takes more knowledge, experience and time than modern structures

Most old homes have been modified over time, often with a mix of parts from different eras. It is critical to evaluate how these interact and function.

In addition to our standard thorough inspections (over 80 items and 400 points) for the existing or new homes, we will explain the original structure and the changes that have occurred over time.

We will evaluate also the following items:

  • Damage to the structure from alterations, age, weather or insects

  • Remaining service life of major systems and components (roofing materials, heater, wiring, pipes, etc.)

  • Undersized electric service for today's needs

  • Presence of building materials no longer in use due to health concerns (asbestos and lead in the paint)

  • High heating costs from inefficient heating systems and un-insulated spaces

Potomac Homes will provide you with a thorough evaluation and a detailed computerized report with annotated color pictures of your prospective old house, indicating which systems and components are substandard and require upgrading, and recommendations for  improvements.
